Today, I’ll be talking about one of my major guilty pleasures: Fortnite. I find Fortnite to be one of my favorites amongst the many battle royale games that exist. I enjoy the whimsicalness of it – I like that it’s not more realistic such as PUBG – the world is so vibrant and fun to explore in a way. With the constant changing of the map too, there’s always something new to find or discover. I’ve been playing for years, and although I greatly miss the more original maps, I can appreciate the newer ones too – like the one they have currently involves chrome – you can actually go through chrome walls, it’s really weird but a fun mechanic. But what I think Fortnite has continue to do is explore the boundaries of multiplayer.

To start, Fortnite has several modes of play. You can play with up to 4 friends in one squad, or you can play solos by yourself. You can even play duos/trios/squads with strangers if you’d prefer. Plus, Fortnite used to bring a 50 vs. 50 match during the end of a season as a fun way of play before they release new content. But no matter what, your rounds will consist of 100 players fighting to be #1. This already shows a few ways in which Fortnite contains different ways of multiplayer in one game.

However, they somewhat recently allowed the ability to make your own maps, which expands the game more than ever before. This new aspect reminds me of Roblox, where other players make their own maps and games for people to enjoy. Although I haven’t explored any myself, I feel that this can bring players together even more, which is really interesting for a competitive game.

Ultimately, I love Fortnite. I love their chosen mechanics, their art style, and so on. I think they explore what it means to be multiplayer in a expansive way, and I appreciate that. They combine the competition and cooperation, and there’s multiple layers to it, making it hard to confine to one type of multiplayer style.
