Super Mario Movie (2005), created by Cory Arcangel, is a movie made out of a very heavily modified cartridge of Super Mario Bros.

The textures and colors of both the background and blocks on which Mario stands are constantly shifting and Mario himself seems to talk to the viewer via the background text. However, he is unable to actually speak freely, as he is limited by what the pre-existing game space can actually produce.

The word Joy appears all over the place in the background and on glitchy text, suggesting that it’s something that Mario wants to feel, but cannot due to the rather unkempt nature of his ROM. The music is altered, of course, and is clearly intended to evoke and unsettling vibe for the viewer, since Mario’s world is entirely unrecognizable from its original intended state, and he doesn’t even get to keep his better, taller, higher-jumping brother around, who is mysteriously absent from this film.

There are several points at which Mario seems to be talking to himself, and at some point he plays pong. I still don’t really get that one. Maybe Luigi would know. He knows pretty much everything. Shame he’s not here. Mario grapples with his existence as a video game, kinda like Wreck it Ralph if it was more woke and introspective, but there’s still no Luigi. Eventually it ends with the OG Mario start screen, where one could select 2 player if they wished, and upon dying as Mario, get to see Luigi.
