I must confess, I love the content created by Riot Games. I’m an avid League of Legends player and community member, and I follow new Valorant content and Esports even though I don’t play the game.

The Careers in Gaming Panel with Riot Games was an amazing experience from a fan perspective and a fantastic networking opportunity from a student perspective. I particularly enjoyed getting to speak with Katherine Waterman, a UChicago alumna and Associate Producer at Riot.

The part of the panel I most enjoyed was the discussion of how new agents get designed for Valorant, the titular peek behind the curtain. Gekko is probably my favorite agent, and real ones will know I was singing along to Greater Than One during the slide where we got to see the final product.

The most important part of the panel for me was how assured I felt, after listening to everything that was said and having long conversations with Tim and Katherine, that a career in gaming was something it made sense for me to pursue. I have long had trepidations about turning a hobby into work and thereby sucking all the joy out of it. Recently, I’ve decided to just go for it though, and so far it’s turned out great. I started working at the MADD Center and it’s been a thoroughly positive experience, and this panel has convinced me that working at Riot would be a similar experience.
